Introducing ServiceNow Service Graph

What is Service Graph?

Service Graph is the next-generation system of record for digital products and services. It is the digital data foundation for using ServiceNow's platform and products.

Historically, the CMDB has focused on infrastructure, assets, and their relationships. However, as IT organizations embrace agile methods and modern technologies, they now need a consistent, data-driven approach to the entire technology stack – from infrastructure to the application layer.

Unlike traditional CMDBs, which focus primarily on infrastructure and relationships, Service Graph is the repository for data that spans the entire lifecycle of digital services. Besides including infrastructure, it also extends into areas such as planning, application development, DevOps pipeline and deployment, performance, cost, portfolio optimization, and other business processes. Service Graph underpins all ServiceNow capabilities, creating unified visibility and allowing ServiceNow applications to easily share digital lifecycle data. Combined with the workflow capabilities of the Now Platform®, this breaks down data and process silos, powering integrated end-to-end workflows.

What about CMDB?

Service Graph includes CMDB. It extends the notion of CMDB to include new data types that encompass the entire digital lifecycle of applications and services, from planning to design to application development and deployment, so the data it captures is broader and deeper than CMDB alone. Service Graph also provides additional design guidance, data governance and data reconciliation capability through Service Graph Connector program, helping to make it far easier to bring data into the CMDB.

Within the broader Service Graph, the existing CMDB data becomes more valuable because it can be used to make decisions across planning, application development, deployment, business processes, and more. Therefore, CMDB remains a key component of Service Graph. ServiceNow will continue to invest resources in CMDB, and our customer’s CMDB investments will be preserved.

What are the outcomes customers can expect from Service Graph?

Service Graph will enable outcomes in other ServiceNow products and deliver Increased relational value between ServiceNow applications. Some examples are:

  • ITBM/DevOps/ITOM — understanding whether application updates are impacting performance, with traceability back to the specific people, teams and technical changes.
  • DevOps — proactive management of change from within the CI/CD pipeline to find problems before deployment.
  • ITBM/Cloud Insights — understanding the complete cost picture associated with delivering a service, both human and technology, in dollars and time.

In short, because Service Graph is the nexus point for all data collected from every stage of the software development lifecycle and because it is all following the Common Service Data Model framework and guidance, customers will be able to use ServiceNow to answer questions that tie together people, process, technology and costs in a service-oriented view.
