ServiceNow® App Engine and Automation Engine together support ServiceNow’s  Creator Workflows. Creator Workflows provide organizations a strategic low-code application development and automation platform to help them innovate with low-code, modernize legacy processes, and extend workflow automation across the enterprise.

App Engine is ServiceNow’s low-code application platform that allows users with any level of coding experience to build rich, connected business apps fast, and at scale. The Now Platform® San Diego release is an exciting release for App Engine because it brings to market several low-code features that will help organizations accelerate low-code adoption and further empower citizen development across the enterprise.

Decision Builder

Decision Builder is a new application available since the Rome release that enables business users to quickly create and update re-usable decision logic in a modern, no-code interface. This empowers users to own and control their business process decision logic and criteria, independent of flow design and without having to rely on IT. Decision Builder replaces complicated multi if-then-else flow logic in Flow Designer with a simple "Make Decision" action that then calls the appropriate decision tables.

Decision tables built in Decision Builder can be called from anywhere in the platform, not only Flow Designer but also including script. And because decision logic is de-coupled from flows or script, decision logic or criteria can be updated without updating flow or script logic, streamlining the app maintenance and change processes.

Flow Designer diagramming

With the San Diego release, developers can now build flows visually. Flow Designer diagramming provides a flowchart-styled, diagram layout for developers to easily build and understand complex sequences and logic. Previously, it was difficult for less technical users to understand and track complex nesting and logic in Flow Designer. With diagramming, it is now easier than ever to build and understand flows by showing direct paths from one component in Flow Designer—such as an action, logic, or trigger—to the next. Additionally, users can quickly toggle back and forth from the existing top-down view to the new diagramming view, allowing for greater visual clarity and simplified development. Diagraming also has a familiar layout for legacy Workflow customers looking to easily migrate to Flow Designer.

Overall, diagramming provides a visual-first layout for low-code and citizen developers looking to understand complex sequences and logic when building flows. This makes it easier than ever for developers with any level of coding experience to build flows in Flow Designer, further enabling citizen development across the enterprise.

Ad hoc Playbook activities

Within Process Automation Designer, we have added support for dynamic case management with the introduction of ad hoc Playbook activities. Previously, if an activity not in the standard Playbook was needed to expedite resolution, agents had to go outside the Playbook. This introduced process friction, fragmenting case management and reducing end-to-end visibility. Now, agents can use their expertise and judgment to dynamically manage cases. With ad hoc Playbook activities, agents can quickly add new process activities on-the-fly anywhere in a Playbook for more flexibility. This allows fulfillers to make decisions in real time regarding any additional process activities needed, which can efficiently expedite incident, request, and case resolution for the business.
