What’s new in the Tokyo release for ITSM Pro DevOps?

by Richard Hawes

It’s exciting to announce a new capability being added to ITSM Professional and ITSM Enterprise in the DevOps space. DevOps Config is a brand-new application, available as of the Tokyo release. There are also major enhancements to share about DevOps Change Velocity.

Almost every organization is leveraging, or beginning to leverage, DevOps practices to speed up innovation and to be more responsive to their customers and stakeholders. Larger organizations must comply with regulations and governance rules that can slow down application development value stream.

ServiceNow’s DevOps applications in ITSM Professional and ITSM Enterprise connect the world of DevOps to the work you are already managing in ServiceNow to streamline and automate governance and compliance.

Here are our latest enhancements and innovations for the Tokyo release:

DevOps Config – During the application delivery lifecycle there are often hundreds and sometimes thousands of configuration changes to be made. Configuration changes often happen in flat files with minimum access controls and changes can be spread across many files in multiple stages and by different people. Configuration changes remain a leading cause of outages once code is running in production.

DevOps Config centralizes the management of configuration data pairs. You can import current configuration items from existing repositories and apply access controls. DevOps config inserts seamlessly into your existing DevOps toolchains and applies policies that can validate changes as a step in the pipeline – preventing changes that can cause problems. Configuration items are normalized while stored in ServiceNow and can then be exported as needed in the right formats for deployment tools like Ansible, Terraform and Chef.

DevOps Config adds to the library of DevOps data stored in ServiceNow. That information can be used with DevOps Change as criteria to automate change requests or as part of root cause analysis to understand what changed when an incident occurs.

The value extends to other integrations too. ServiceNow Integrated Risk Management Pro and Enterprise have introduced a new store app called the DevOps Accelerator to work with the ITSM Pro DevOps applications to help manage risk in the development process and to provide enhanced audit data.

DevOps Change Velocity new support for GitHub Actions – GitHub Actions has grown in popularity as a DevOps pipeline tool and so we have added out-of-the-box integration in the Tokyo release. Our change automation can now apply to GitHub Actions pipelines in a similar way to what we’ve had before now for Jenkins, Azure DevOps, and GitLab. This is especially valuable for organizations that may be migrating to GitHub Actions from other pipelines as we can apply policy consistently across multiple types and normalize insights across different pipelines.

DevOps Change Velocity new support for Azure DevOps Artifacts – Direct integration with JFrog Artifactory has been available for some time. In Tokyo we have added a new direct integration with the Azure DevOps Artifact repository. Artifacts helps us to understand what comprises a full release, even in complex application that span build and deployment pipelines or across multiple teams that contribute to a release.

DevOps Insights new flow and quality metrics and new UI – DevOps Insights is a component of DevOps Change Velocity that can provide unique information about DevOps pipelines and change processes. The user interface has been completely refreshed In the Tokyo release and new metrics have been added.
