ETC vs EAC - numbers look off

We are seeing something odd - Estimate to Comple numbers are HIGHER than Estimate at Completion. I would expect the opposite with Estimate at Completion being a sum of actuals to date plus estimate to complete. Has anyone else experienced this or am I misunderstanding these definitions?

Hi Debbie,

The definition of EAC ETC you mentioned is correct

EAC = actual costs (AC) till date + estimate to complete (ETC)

Just verify if there are expense lines with negative expenses if not please verify that script include 'ProjectCalculateAJAX' is in OOTB version.

Thanks,

Vinay

That is very strange that the ETC is higher than the EAC,  your understanding is correct on how the calculations work.   I do not know your specifics, but we have a related problem with ETC/EAC Calculation.  At the beginning of each month for about 7 work days the ETC is not correct and therefor EAC.  Let me explain.   Briefly, the June actuals do not get posted until about July 7th. During those 7 days in early july, snow does not "Include" the June Forecast in ETC, and since the June actuals are not posted yet until July 7th, the  ETC/EAC does not include either June actuals or Forecast, therefore understanding the costs.

Jim, Something is not right. ETC should be less than EAC at any point in time.

But, ETC is relative to the period you are clicking on "Calculate Esitames at Completion". If you are clicking this action in July, then we consider July planned costs and the planned costs for future periods.

In your example, Actuals arrive on July 7th. Still the ETC should be correct. There can be a difference in EAC as actuals for June are considered only after you post the actuals.

Could you share more details around your process on what you do during the closure or let me know if you want to schedule a call to go over this.

Hi Debbie,

Did not yet encounter that error, your expectation is correct. I could only see this happening if you have some negative actuals in previous months.

Did encounter problems in calculation if you have resource plans under dub-tasks of the project (so not project itself).
